Why study medicine in Latvia? Our Medicine programme is specifically designed to teach students the core competencies that are required in order to become highly skilled doctors who, upon graduation, are capable of pursuing a wide variety of careers.

This programme is characterised by student cooperation and active engagement in group work. Studies involve working on a series of patient-centred problems, revealing the basic principles that influence human health and disease. Medical knowledge and practical clinical skills are gained by giving students the opportunity to work with patients from the 3rd year onwards.

The Faculty of Medicine offers professional education, and the opportunity to study medicine under the guidance of professors from Latvian universities and hospitals, as well as from abroad. As a student of the “Medicine” programme, you will acquire up-to-date knowledge and skills, which are competitive in Europe and the rest of the world.

Dentistry

Prepares qualified dentists who practice general dentistry – treat patients with oral cavity and tooth diseases, are involved in educating the community in disease prevention.

The study programme provides a platform for the acquisition of the skills required for examination of a patient’s oral cavity and teeth, identification of dental problems and for undergoing complex dental treatment – restorative treatment of a defective tooth or replacement with a dental implant (dental prosthetics).

Students also acquire knowledge on how to analyse clinical cases, solve dental problems and master skills for carrying out dental public health activities.

Nursing

The aim of the programme is to develop a health care system for patients based on the economic and social needs of Latvia, by providing qualified specialists – nurses.

After completion of the study programme the graduate is awarded a professional Bachelor’s degree in health care with the professional qualification – medical nurse and specialisation in one of the seven basic specialisations – Ambulatory Care Nurse, Surgical Care Nurse, Operating Room Nurse, Mental Health Nurse, Internal Care Nurse; Anaesthetic, Intensive and Emergency Care Nurse or Paediatric Care Nurse; the programme prepares for further postgraduate studies.

Occupational Therapy

An occupational therapist understands both the way a person functions and the interaction between the individual and the environment, and is thus able to help patients regain their ability to perform daily activities and learn new skills after an injury or illness.

Occupational therapy studies will allow you to study the basic medical disciplines and gain theoretical knowledge as well as practical skills in your area of ​​specialization, with in-depth training in environmental assessment and adaptation, and the practical use of technical aids. During your studies you will practice clinical practice with patients in Latvian hospitals and rehabilitation centers, which will put practical points on the “i” for your professional specialization.

Physiotherapy

The program provides the Latvian rehabilitation system with qualified physiotherapists who perform examination and treatment of the patient’s functional condition, helping to reduce and regain lost function.

The study programme aims to provide students with comprehensive knowledge of medicine and human health, preparing qualified and considerate professionals with a can-do attitude towards their work. After graduation of the study programme Pharmacy the students will have acquired skills and knowledge about:

  • types of drugs, drug manufacturing, analysis and determination methods
  • effects, metabolism, side effects, rational and safe use of drugs
  • research of drugs, preparation principles and methods in pharmacies and drug manufacturing companies, turnover of medicinal products
  • pharmaceutical care, the connection between pharmacy and other fields of healthcare, teamwork with other health care specialists
  • planning and implementation of scientific research in the field of pharmacy.
